This holiday contains a double solemnity: the glory of Holy Trinity and glory of Holy Ghost, which visibly descended onto the Apostles as they met in the Upper Room of a Jerusalem house. The descent of the Holy Ghost is the peak of the redeeming act of Jesus Christ. This is why the holiday is the joyful and great conclusion of church solemnities glorifying the resurrected Lord, since in the Days of Descent of the Holy Ghost, Christ’s Church is being born and the Holy Ghost leads, blesses and protects It.
On this day Ukrainians decorate their temples and dwellings with tree branches, herbs and flowers as plants are the symbol of life, therefore this is why they became the symbol of the life-giving Holy Ghost. Just as nature is renewing with vivid greenery and blossoming flowers, the Holy Mother Church and Her children are renewed by the power of the Holy Ghost. The clergymen also adorn themselves with green vestments on this day.
According to folk customs the most preferable plants for Pentecost decorations are Sweet Flag (Acorus calamus, укр. «лепеха»), lovage (Levisticum officinale, укр. «любисток»), Peppermint (Mentha × piperita, укр. «м’ята перцева») and Linden (укр. «липа»). All these plants have a strong, pleasant aroma and are considered to have medicinal properties.
The celebration of The Feast of the Holy Trinity shows that there is a strong bond between Orthodox and Ukrainian folk traditions and such ancient customs are highly respected by all Ukrainians.
